Overview

The Álava use case addresses mobility and road safety challenges during harsh winter conditions. By combining real-time weather, traffic, and infrastructure data, the pilot improves decision-making for road maintenance teams and increases safety for road users. The use case is developed within the Mobility Lab and combines a physical testing environment with a secure digital data space.

Objectives

The main objective is to improve road safety, transport efficiency, and resilience during snow and ice conditions. The pilot aims to support proactive road management and provide timely information to both road operators and drivers.

Approach

The data space is built on a secure cloud infrastructure and aligned with European initiatives such as Gaia-X and the International Data Spaces Association. Two key data services are developed: a thermal road map integrated into the NIEVES platform to anticipate icy conditions, and a real-time alert system that informs drivers during winter weather events. The implementation follows DS4SSCC principles for governance, interoperability, and data protection.

Expected Impact

The use case improves safety for drivers, supports smarter and more anticipatory decision-making for road crews, and increases operational efficiency. By sharing data across organisations in a trusted way, the use case demonstrates how data spaces can deliver concrete public value in critical mobility contexts. The approach can be reused by other regions facing similar climate and mobility challenges, offering a practical model for data-driven road safety within the DS4SSCC framework.
